This term all classes are discussing and thinking about what it is to be a ‘Digital Citizen” (yes another new term to add to your vocabulary!) They will be discussing; How do we behave when we are online? How do we stay safe when we are online? How do I get help? etc.

Our plan is to develop clear expectations that align with our school values and then make these visible throughout the school. In doing this we hope to be able to do away with our present cumbersome cybersafety agreements. Later this term or early next we would like to involve you in this process too.

SUMS is meeting next week as they are starting to get into the swing of the School Fair which will be held on Saturday 4 November. Keep a watch out for how you can help with this event. For this to be a success we will need everyone involved.

Some of the funds raised from our last fair have been used to restock our library after a major cull of the books, and new tables and bean bags have just been purchased. The remaining funds have been invested and will be used along with funds raised this year to complete the revamp of our library, which we hope will see large doors replacing the present windows, opening out onto a deck.

Over the next two weeks all our classes will be participating in the Kia Kaha programme. This is a well established national programme we revisit every three years. It focuses on how to work as a team and deal with personal conflict and bullying behaviour. We will talk about how we feel and act when others “Push our Boundaries” and relate the learning to our School Values, making good choices, responsibility, respect and pride. The Police Education Officer, Gerry Tonkin will work with all classes over the two weeks.

This term teachers have focussed on more effective assessment of writing, further developing understanding and consistency. We have also been looking at what we can do to improve the achievement of boys and we have been developing our skill level in the use of new e-Learning tools. With the recent purchase of iPads we now have a greater number of tools to use to enhance our learning. These three areas will continue to be our focus for 2012.

Last week we received a donation of $1500 from the Moutere Inn, being the proceeds from their monthly Quiz Night & raffle. Thank you to Moutere Inn, and sponsors Kahurangi Estate Winery, Woollaston Estates, and Neudorf Vineyard. We really appreciate it. The money will go towards children’s ideas for adding to the playground in the theme ‘Pushing the Boundaries’.

ROOM 1 – Otto Richards, for working really hard to develop your writing skills. It is great to see the pleasure you get from your success. Keep up the hard work.

ROOM 2 – Xavier Griffith It’s wonderful to hear you sounding your words out and using your word card at writing time Xavier. You are really using your thinker and active lights and it’s making such a difference.

ROOM 3 – Sam Erni – for persevering and pushing his boundaries both in and outside the classroom.

ROOM 4 – Hamish Grant-Sands. Being a fantastic literate learner, sharing his ideas through writing on the class blog.

ROOM 5 – Grace Kavanagh. Grace gets this award for eating cornflakes. At least this is what she tells us she has each morning and it is working! Maybe it’s not the cornflakes but she is certainly having a spoonful of confidence over a whole bowl of active learning. This is evident in her great ideas and sharing in class. Well done.

ROOM 6 – Graham Urquhart for his incredible leadership skills. Graham was an outstanding supportive leader at our day out at Quinney’s Bush, pushing the boundaries. Graham is always very active, he swam exceedingly well at the Motueka Swimming Sports, taking out places in every final. He has also been awarded the Supreme Youth Trophy for Touch Rugby for the last season at Riwaka.

ROOM 2 – Angus Van de Ven. I have heard such great things about your reading! You are focussed and really taking control of your learning. Keep up the fantastic effort Angus!

ROOM 3 – Dominic Townshend, for always contributing his enthusiasm and enjoyment for learning.

ROOM 4 - Emma Parker & Alexis Faulkner For being active learners – independently identifying a problem to solve & and identifying possible solutions

ROOM 5 – Tom Wood. Tom put our school values on display at Quinney’s Bush on Friday by helping others in his house group. He was patient and caring as he led some of our smaller students through challenges on the confidence course. Respect and responsibility just make you proud, don’t they?

The senior students care of our younger students was fabulous, it really was a rewarding day where our children were actively involved in their learning AND having FUN!
