Meet the Teacher

Published on March 13th, 2009 (2 years, 11 months ago.)

What a great turn out on Monday night when so many of you were able to come and meet with your child’s class teacher to hear first hand their routines and expectations.

At the meeting I spoke about our Targets for 2009

  1. To continue to improve Student Achievement in writing. This was targeted last year and will continue to be so this year as we refine and build on the teaching and learning programmes we developed in 2008.
  2. To improve our students achievement in Spelling. We have identified a consistent spelling programme that we are going to trial for the next two years. Presently teachers are assessing student needs and becoming familiar with the programme.
  3. To develop an Upper Moutere School curriculum that meets our school Vision Statements and provides a realistic balance in all of the curriculum areas.

I also spoke about HOMEWORK.  This continues to be a topic of great debate however this is our stance for 2009.

Homework this year will be in the following form…

  1. Reading: Each child will be expected to read each night. This may be a book that they bring home each night (especially in the Junior School) or one of their choosing.
  2. Basic Facts: Starting with addition and subtraction to 20. This must be known instantly. Then students will move onto multiplication and division which is taught in a specific pattern, teachers will let you know more about what your child should be working on.
  3. Spelling…but probably NOT in the format that we have used before. We will let you know when we are more familiar with how this may be beneficial for students.
  4. On occasion teachers may ask the class or individuals to carry out other activities as they fit their class programmes.
